Literally inside the walls of Beijing Film Studio lots. He moved to the U.S. and settled in Jackson, Mississippi when he was 14. In the Deep South, Zao learned English from watching television, going to church revivals and joining the debate club. He received a B.S in Physics and B.A. in Philosophy from Millsaps College, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film Directing and Production from New York University. Soon after moving to LA, J.J. Abrams took Zao under his wing and made him a Directing Fellow at Bad Robot. Zao’s next development deal with Tencent Pictures China led to his directorial feature debut. The Precipice Game (2016) was produced by Fundamental Films and IM Global. Zao’s f has premiered at Tribeca, Fantasporto, Busan, Montreal, Yubari, Palm Springs and others. Zao won Best Director and Best Horror/Thriller awards at NBCUniversal Shorts Fest, and Panavision Filmmaker Award. His short film Honeymoon Suite was optioned by NBC to be developed into a TV show.
